A New Era of Film Funding posted by Scott on 11.20.03
As usual, fundraising is at the forefront of virtually every conversation Siege Perilous producers engage in. It is a perennial concern for us, being a small unknown independent company who refuses to loosen our grip on the creative process when it comes to our stories. That's the reason I found this concept so interesting.
Apparently Ethan Hawke has decided to try to raise $7 million for his next project, entitled "Billy Dead," entirely through an IPO. It is an interesting concept to me, but I think it requires someone of Hawke's notoriety to pull it off. What would happen if James made a similar announcement? I'd virtually guarantee that we'd get only a VERY small handful of the $875.00 minimum stock purchases as are required under the IPO. Then again, 100 shares of stock in a film for only $8.75 each seems like a pretty good deal!
In any case, there is a pretty interesting (if sometimes under-informed) discussion of these concepts over at MetaFilter, where I first heard of this story. Check it out. It got me thinking.
